Dunea: expert in dunes and water

Dunea stands for drinking water and nature conservancy

Dunea produces and distributes tap water of a drinking water quality that ranks amongst the best in the world. We supply 24 hours a day and with the least possible leakage and service disruption. Water quality and composition

Drinking water

Producing good and reliable drinking water in harmony with nature. That is what Dunea is committed to every day. Over 1.3 million people in the western part of South Holland can count on Dunea tapwater 24 hours a day. What does drinking water consist of? And what is the hardness of the water? Dutch drinking water is among the best in the world because it is purified so well. That doesn’t mean it holds no other substances. Drinking water contains minerals, salts, good bacteria etc.

Smart water use

Water is essential for life. Yet we use it without thinking what it takes to produce clean drinking water. Population growth, climate change and pollution put pressure on clean freshwater resources. We can work together in looking after our most precious resources and use water smartly.

Tips for smart water use

The Freshman project

In coastal dunes, it is quite common to find brackish groundwater at greater depth in the soil profile. The origin of brackish groundwater is mixing of rainwater percolating from above, and seawater which intrudes into the aquifer. Can we use this brackish water as a new source for drinking water? And what would be the effect of abstracting brackish groundwater on the large freshwater stock that is present in the coastal dunes of The Hague? Could we even increase our freshwater storage in the dunes by extracting brackish groundwater?” These are the questions we are addressing in the Freshman project, a five-years research project co-financed by the EU LIFE Programme.
